The establishment of churches in India had begun in the early 14th century. Now there are more than 5000 churches across the country. Although being sacred and holy landmarks, some of the churches are admired for their architectural design and their years of existence. 1. CHRIST CHURCH, KASAULI
With not many attractions around, this 167-year old church has turned into a prominent landmark of this quiet hill town over the years.
2. BASILICA OF OUR LADY OF THE MOUNT, MUMBAI
The locality is famous for many of its iconic structures and this semi-gothic edifice is one of them. The traditional and renowned Bandra Fair is centered on the church for a week.
3. SACRED HEART BASILICA, PONDICHERRY
The bright color of the absolute dazzling Gothic architecture is bound to rivet every passer-by’s attention. Out of the 11 across the globe, India’s only Basilica of Sacred Heart is this and this fact makes it all the more popular amongst visitors.
4. ST. FRANCIS CHURCH, KOCHI
If compared with other historic churches in India, this one falls well short of being an architectural marvel but still manages to attract visitors from around the world, especially Portugal. The historical significance of this particular church lies in the very fact that it houses the burial spot of the celebrated Portuguese explorer and navigator, Vasco da Gama. Albeit the corpse was taken back to his native place by his son much later, the spot is preserved till date. Localities call it ‘Vasco da Gama Church’.
5. Sé Catedral de Santa Catarina, OLD GOA
Some of the iconic churches of India have been established in Old Goa and this unique piece of architecture keeps the legacy of Portuguese settlers alive. Churches like these keep the tourists flocking in the locality, albeit popular beaches make them visit the mini-state at first.
