3-Day Munnar Itinerary

Day 1:

Your expedition begins from the second day as your arrival day is gonna leave you deprived of energy to venture out.

Mode of Transport: Althoughlocal buses do ply on the roads of Munnar, but they are restricted to main roads. Resorts and most of the attractions are remote from the main roads. To save time and energy, booking a taxi makes things a lot easier and simpler.

National Park excursion

10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

First spot of sightseeing is towards the North and 15 km from Pallivasal, Eravikulam National Park

The park is famously known for being home to the Nilgiri tahr(fauna) and Neelakurinji (flora). Albeit sighting the animals are difficult. But the best part of the park is it offers majestic views of lush green grassland. Nature lovers and photo enthusiasts would spend long time here. The place is visited by large crowd, so get here early to avoid the queue at ticket counter.

Time duration: 1 – 1.5 hour

Next attraction will be a tea museum but before that head towards the town for some delicious lunch at Hotel Gurubhavan for veg and non veg cuisines at a price range of Rs. 300 – 400 for two.

If looking for pure veg restaurant, Saravanabhavan is the place to be which claims to be the largest vegetarian chain of restaurants.

This is also a popular market area. You can spend some time at Munnar Market and look for some local souvenirs.

Not just a Tea museum tour

02:00 PM – 05:00 PM

After quenching your hunger, head towards KDHP Tea Museum which is just 2 km from the centre of Munnar.

Kenan Devan Hills Plantation (KDHP) factory is managed by Tata Tea Limited. It is not an ordinary tea factory. It beautifully portrays the history of Kerala. It houses some of the ancient equipment and devices that were used during the colonial period. The building of the factory was used as a railway station for Kundala Valley Railways, once upon a time.

 It is a must visit destination.

Time duration: 2 – 2.5 hours

Waterfalls and Sunset point Visit

06:00 PM – 07:00 PM

Next spots are near Pallivasal and can be visited on your way back to your hotel.

Attukad Waterfalls is surrounded by rocky hills and dense green forest cover. The stream appears to be a string of pearls. The gushing sound of the falls brings a sense of calmness among the visitors.

Time duration: 30 – 45 minutes

Your last spot for the day is Pothamedu viewpoint 4 km from Attukad waterfalls and on your way to your hotel.

Pothamedu viewpoint is a vantage point to see the sunset and sunrise. Sunset over the green bed of Munnar hills will make a perfect end to the adventurous day.

Time duration: 30 – 45 minutes

Day 2:

Today you head towards Top Station, the highest point of Munnar, with multiple stopovers on the way.

Affair with Natural World

09:00 AM – 12:00 PM

If travelling with kids, your first stop will be Carmelagiri Elephant Park, a30-minute drive from Pallivasal.

Carmelagiri Elephant Park is a reserve for elephants which provides a safe habitat for them. Tourists are allowed inside and observe how majestically these animals conduct themselves. You can choose packages on hourly basis and get to feed, bathe and ride. Children are bound to have a memorable experience. To avoid the queue, reach early.

Time duration: 1 – 1.5 hour

Next stop is Mattupetti Dam, 5 km from Carmelagiri Elephant Park towards Top Station.

The dam is more than 60 years old. The large reservoir of water makes for the mesmerizing natural beauty. Photographers will find it difficult to keep their hands off their camera. Lately, boating services have begun to entertain the crowds.

Time duration: 45 minutes – 1 hour

Echo Point is at the end of the same reservoir and 6 km from Mattupetty Dam.

The spot is popular for its echoing phenomenon. Tourists here shout at top of their lungs to hear the echo.

Time duration: 30 – 45 minutes 

Highest Point of Munnar

01:00 PM – 04:00 PM

Top Station forms the border of Kerala and Tamil Nadu and is the highest point of Idduki district.

It takes approx. 30 minutes to get here. Afternoon is an ideal time to visit when clouds are least expected. The place had operational ropeway more than 100 years ago whose remains can be seen. There are many food stalls offering noodles and beverages. Being a route for trekkers, trekking camps are set up here. Most tourists prefer to get here by cabs.

Time duration: 1 – 1.5 hour

This will be your last tourist destination to cover. Return journey to your hotel will take close to 90 minutes.

If feeling hungry, don’t mind to grab a bite at Pizza Max, a popular fast food joint in heart of Munnar.

Day 3:

Option 1: After exploring the highest point in Munnar, today you have a chance to visit the highest tea plantation factory in the world, Kolukkumalai Tea Factory, and it is likely to consume your whole day.

Option 2: If you have kids, we recommend to skip Kolukkumalai Tea Factory and visit an unusual adventure park, Dream and Fun Adventure.

Option 1: World’s Highest Tea Plantation

09:00 AM – 05:00 PM

Have your breakfast and try to get going by 9 o’clock and head towards Chinnakanal which takes an hour. Hereon, you have to hire a jeep which takes you through the tough roads along the hill with tea plantations. The up-hill journey in the jeep will take approx. 2 hours. The journey may sound to be difficult, but it is something you get to see exclusively when you visit Munnar. The majestic views keep you energized throughout the journey and tiredness doesn’t get to you.

Once you reach the factory, you are greeted by the generous and friendly staff and served freshly prepared tea from their factory. Then the tour of the multi-storeyed factory begins which takes close to an hour and a half. After gaining knowledge about various quality of tea, you cannot resist from buying a couple of boxes of all the varieties.

Return journey to your hotel will take 2 hours.

Option 2: Adventure Park on the hills

09:00 AM – 05:00 PM

The park opens at 9 o’clock in the morning. It takes around 30 mins to reach from Pallivasal. The park offers a plethora of adventurous rides and many activities. More details and bookings, visit their website http://dreamlandmunnar.com/.
