Ooty is an abbreviation for Ootacamund which has been anglicized from Udagamandalam. This place is probably the most popular hill station in the southern part of India and so much so that traffic congestion becomes a problem during the peak season.

Like other hill stations in the country, Ooty was also the summer capital for the officials of East India Company because of its pleasant weather and now a popular tourist destination. Tea farming and tourism form the major part of its economy.

The place is also famous for the Nilgiri Moutain Railways which uses a unique technique while ascending the steep slopes. A technique that is exclusively found on their locomotives and has been of special interest for railway engineers and railfans.

English and Tamil are very commonly used in this part of the country.

When to Travel?

December to April is the time when you must look to plan your visit to Ooty. The region receives rainfall for a prolonged period from June to October.
