Cherrapunjee Sightseeing Itinerary

Mode of Transport: For hassle-free commute and make most of your time, hire a cab for the day’s sightseeing.

Mawsmai Village Visit

09:00 AM – 11:00 AM

You begin your sightseeing in Mawsmai (4 km from Cherrapunjee) at Mawsmai Cave.

The cave is one of the must-visit places in Meghalaya. Made of limestone, the cave gives you a glimpse of natural rock formation that has been taking place for millions of years. While walking inside you would endure the hidden elements of nature. The shapes and sizes of the rocks inside cave leave you in a state of wonder.

Outside, you can warm yourself with a plate of hot Maggi and some beverage.

Time duration: 30 – 45 min

1 km from Mawsmai Cave is the Seven Sisters Falls Viewpoint.

You can clear see 7 distinct streams of water flowing from the top of a hill. The panoramic view from this point is truly a sight to behold.

Time duration: 15 – 30 min

To get better view of the valley, head towards Mawsmai Nongthymmai Eco Park.

Just 2 km from the viewpoint, the Eco Park is a place for family outings. Children can enjoy swings and slides while others can take a stroll and enjoy the scenery and ambiance.

Time duration: 30 – 45 min

Now you head towards Cherrapunjee and make a pit stop at Orange Roots Restaurant. This is a popular place to eat and you might have to wait for some time to get a seat. Only vegetarian dishes are served here.

Fossils, Forests & Falls

12:00 PM – 06:00 PM

After exploring Mawsmai village, you head towards Cherrapunjee and stop at Arwah Caves.

This cave consists of fossils of various shape and sizes. Guides are available at the entrance. Guides can help you to identify the fossil. The wooden access way to the cave goes through a forest. You appreciate the purity of nature as you tread along. Multiple spots for photography. You are bound to have a good time here.

There is a restaurant beside the parking area. You can fill yourselves here and carry on with your sightseeing.

Time duration: 45 min – 1 hour

Next stop will be at Wah-kaba Falls.

To get closer to the waterfall area, you have to climb down close to 200 steps. There is no other way to go to the source of the waterfall. There are multiple spots where you can relax for a while and pose for photographs. Once you get to the waterfall area, you see crystal clear water flowing through the rocks and eventually becoming the waterfall. It is not difficult to complete the trek.

Time duration: 45 min – 1 hour

After this, you head towards a magical place, Garden of Caves.

This is a unique place and must be explored at any cost. The area is actually a forest cover with mini waterfalls spread across. You have to trek along the dedicated route and explore. There a number of spots where you can take a dip or bath under natural shower. Umdawai Medicinal Water is in the middle of the forest and that is where your exploration ends. Elderly people can face some difficulty.

Time duration: 1.5 – 2 hours

At last, your sightseeing ends at Nohkalikai Falls.

The iconic waterfall has become the symbol of Meghalaya. The tallest plunge waterfall in India is located at an isolated region. You won’t find any human settlement here. The waterfall is the only thing that draws tourists in this serene and secluded region. Be there to enjoy the view of sunset.

There are a couple of shops and a canteen where you can have your evening tea with pakodas and Maggi.

Time duration: 45 min – 1 hour

After sunset, you can explore the Sohra Bazaar and Cherrapunjee Market on foot. Make sure to get adequate rest for the following day’s activities.
